Women's issues and rights(why is this not listed!), African development
Project or initiative you have started or would love to start:
In the Continuum Collaborative - a nonprofit that seeks to bring the African female voice to the forefront of all issues concerning her through a multidimensional approach. It seeks to aid the empowerment of African women and girls. It will serve as a bridge between concerned Western individuals and/or organizations and African organizations and individuals who work for the improved experience of women and girls. It will also seek to facilitate the exposure of opportunities to young African women and girls- especially in the area of education, and to develop leadership skills amongst them as well as aiding those talented in the arts in obtaining training and exposure. It also will have a rights component, empowering young girls and women through information about their rights, sexually, socially and economically.
What skills and resources do you currently have for your initiative? What are the current needs for your initiative?
Have a very small team, have an advisory board - couldnt even begin to list all the needs - still very infantile. Do need more of a team.
What kind of change do you hope to create in your community or in the world? Why are you passionate about this? How has your personal story led you to this passion?
Wow, okay, I use my art mainly to effect change; my core passion and the play(s) I write and perform tell the stories of African women. I desire to participate in African women gaining a much, much louder global voice. I want my western counterparts to recognize and connect with the humanity, complexity and power of their African counterpart. I want to see black people empowered, I want to see women empowered, I want to see Africa developed, I want to see every person on earth truly pocess the power to choose their own path and realize their fullest potential - thereby living in the power of their own uniqueness and consequently making the world a better place. I also want to see people embrace their creator - intimately and personally - the most fufilling relationship (in my experience) to ever be had. I reallly couldnt begin to go into why I am who I am - I am Zimbabwean and American, I am a lover of Christ; I have always been kinda passionate, kinda driven - spending half my life in both places has caused me to love Africa more and more and feel called to devote my life to its betterment. Wait for the memoirs! (kidding, but not).
Additional Comments/Favorite Quote/Favorite Album/Other:
this org is great, I am in complete support - need some contemporary African artists up in it though! Let me know if you need recommendations!

Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Anyone who’s been through a serious loss knows about the baffling part: After it’s over, you are still you. You are you, plus the loss, plus the pain and confusion the loss causes. Maxwell: BLACKsummers’ Night

The best way to listen to Maxwell’s new “BLACKsummers’ Night” is with the volume turned all the way up. The R&B artist didn’t take a turn toward heavy metal during the eight years he’s spent between releasing albums; this one, like his previous three, is full of meditative jams written on the continuum between ardor [...]

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

I believe that children our our future. Most people think Whitney Houston penned the lyrics to the timeless hit “The Greatest Love of All,” or that Randy Watson was the genius behind the words when he led the wildly-famous soul band “Sexual Chocolate.” Actually, the song was originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the [...]

Straight Outta Mogadishu Somali-born rapper K’naan on African pirates and the world’s hardest ghetto. —By Eamon Kircher-Allen for Mother Jones K’naan’s music sounds a little like Eminem’s, if Slim Shady had spent his childhood dodging bullets in Somalia’s civil war. “I Want Michelle Obama Arms!”

She’s Pumped. Your Turn. By LIZ ROBBINS THE arms have taken on a life of their own. They have provoked controversy, envy, a bit of backlash, even bad puns about the right to bare them.
