ABOUT HAYLEY J. HANSELL

Hayley J. Hansell is driven by the maxim You Are Not Who You Know.

From crate digging to record store retail, audio engineering to radio, Hayley J. has gone it alone from day one, taking her time to hone musical skills that form like Voltron on her debut EP.

You Are Not Who You Know cooks down the ingredients of a self-served musical education into six slices of future soul, Hayley’s smooth vocals teamed with jazz-infused head nods courtesy of US producers J. Rawls (Black Star, Lone Catalysts) and Usef Dinero (J-Live, Raheem DeVaughan) & hungarian producer Illegalvoice. On the local tip, DJ Orphan chips in on beat duties and Coco Solid delivers a trademark chutzpah-heavy verse on the EP’s title track.

Don’t get it twisted – this supporting cast of local and international talent don’t define Hayley J. Hansell. Game recognises game and J.Rawls and co have recognised the understated determination behind her music, offering up their own skills to bring Hayley J’s singular musical vision to life.

Hayley J. Hansell is a hustler and a starter in this music game and You Are Not Who You Know marks the first chapter of lessons she’s accumulated to this point in time. Dropping in July on the newly inked All City imprint, the EP points the way forward to a long player due late-2008.

Project or initiative you have started or would love to start:
one of my jobs at the moment is working for a theatre company, and we perform free week long workshops 4 times a year for people aged 15-25...
this is an amazing thing, some area schools don't have drama departments or very limited access to the arts... (www.massivecompany.co.nz)
as i see how much this gives the kids, im thinking i'd like to start something like this that pertains to music... free music workshops across the city each holidays for talented kids, pushing a positive outlook in themselves, while striving for excellence...and doing something they truly love...
What skills and resources do you currently have for your initiative? What are the current needs for your initiative?
TBC !
i'm a singer, qualified audio engineer, radio host and dj, and a major infiltrator...
my day jobs have given me many skills and experiences in networking, in the education system, access to funding bodies, and also a passion for music and rangatahi... so i'm a work in progress...
What kind of change do you hope to create in your community or in the world? Why are you passionate about this? How has your personal story led you to this passion?
i am sick of media, and parts of the community, constantly telling me how all people in a certain area (and the kids especially) having no aspirations or want or skills or talent....
despite the issues constructed against people, i want kids to also know that they come from a history of people who have consistently fostered leaders and greatness among them...
it has definitely been part of my personal battle growing up.. but its amazing what a person can do, if they can feel good about expressing themselves, and be safe in doing so...
i wanna help provide that forum for them if possible....
light...

Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Anyone who’s been through a serious loss knows about the baffling part: After it’s over, you are still you. You are you, plus the loss, plus the pain and confusion the loss causes. The process of healing isn’t really a matter of “getting over it” — taking it in is what’s necessary, incorporating what’s been [...]

Maxwell: BLACKsummers’ Night

The best way to listen to Maxwell’s new “BLACKsummers’ Night” is with the volume turned all the way up. The R&B artist didn’t take a turn toward heavy metal during the eight years he’s spent between releasing albums; this one, like his previous three, is full of meditative jams written on the continuum between ardor [...]

Laura Izibor: Let The Truth Be Told

The Irish diva is soon to go global via her debut album on Atlantic. This album from the young Dubliner was set to be released on Jive Records three years ago, but got shelved. The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

I believe that children our our future. Most people think Whitney Houston penned the lyrics to the timeless hit “The Greatest Love of All,” or that Randy Watson was the genius behind the words when he led the wildly-famous soul band “Sexual Chocolate.” Actually, the song was originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the [...]

K’Naan: Straight Outta Mogadishu

Straight Outta Mogadishu Somali-born rapper K’naan on African pirates and the world’s hardest ghetto. —By Eamon Kircher-Allen for Mother Jones K’naan’s music sounds a little like Eminem’s, if Slim Shady had spent his childhood dodging bullets in Somalia’s civil war.
