President of Aztro Clothing Co.

About Me:
“Aztro” is a clothing line that I started as a way to inspire young people to follow their dreams. I see too many times how indiviual’s, including member’s of my family, succumb to the traditional 9 to 5 job and living paycheck to paycheck. I refuse to do that. It’s not that I do not have any work ethic, its that I have too much work ethic. In recent year’s I have held two different job’s that lasted no more than 3 months each. They were pretty simple jobs, a cashier for CVS Pharmacy and an equipment clerk for a party supply rental company, but what I was doing was not fulfilling to me. I did not wake up every morning excited to work. I never liked making transaction’s at the cash registar, or taking 50lb table’s and chair’s to the back of trucks. That’s when I started drawing clolthes. It started off as a hobby, but for some reason when ever I showed someone what I had drawn they really liked it. This confused and inspired me.
Watching my family struggle financially alway’s hurt me. We never really had the best clothes, shoes, or cars but we somehow made it. Growing up I never lived in the same house for more than a year because of my parent’s constantly changing jobs. At a young age I promised my mother that I would buy her a big house and an expensive car to make her happy. Im sure just about every adolecent promise’s their parents that but it’s those who believe in themselve’s and continue to persue that dream who can actually turn it into a reality. My father is big on ambition. He told me once “you’re an ambitious cat and I like that” (in regards to my clothing line) that was the first time that I was congradulated on how much I wanted somthing. His words still repeat in my head everyday.
When my buisness becomes successful I will give back to communities and schools to show people that I am far from selfish. I also plan to make appearance’s at events ands schools to speak and try to inspire the youth. Maybe a role-model around their age can inspire them more than a role-model their parents ages. Hopefully my success will also help keep young men and women away from gangs and drugs as an alternative. I believe everyone is born with a mission and ambition, it’s those of us who choose to use it and persue it that will be the happiest and most successful in the future.

Tag causes (the causes or issues you are most passionate about):
Addressing Poverty, Fair Trade, Health & Wellness, Mentoring, Urban Redevelopment, Youth Development, Youth Violence Intervention
Project or initiative you have started or would love to start:
I am very interested in creating charitable organizations with other companies to help underprivileged youth with school, food, clothing, or anything of that nature. I am also involved in an organization called "I Walk NY", events from this organization should be happening sooner than later.
What skills and resources do you currently have for your initiative? What are the current needs for your initiative?
I am a natural leader and very ambitious. I've used these skills to my advantage and managed to create a business on my own, Aztro Clothing Co.
What kind of change do you hope to create in your community or in the world? Why are you passionate about this? How has your personal story led you to this passion?
I would love for young people to follow my lead and realize that their are other routes than the street life. I want them to become as ambitious as I am in all of their future endeavors.

Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Anyone who’s been through a serious loss knows about the baffling part: After it’s over, you are still you. You are you, plus the loss, plus the pain and confusion the loss causes. The process of healing isn’t really a matter of “getting over it” — taking it in is what’s necessary, incorporating what’s been [...]

Maxwell: BLACKsummers’ Night

The best way to listen to Maxwell’s new “BLACKsummers’ Night” is with the volume turned all the way up. The R&B artist didn’t take a turn toward heavy metal during the eight years he’s spent between releasing albums; this one, like his previous three, is full of meditative jams written on the continuum between ardor [...]

Laura Izibor: Let The Truth Be Told

The Irish diva is soon to go global via her debut album on Atlantic. This album from the young Dubliner was set to be released on Jive Records three years ago, but got shelved. Then, another label, Atlantic, took their time in deciding just when it should see be released. “Let The Truth Be Told” [...]

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

I believe that children our our future. Most people think Whitney Houston penned the lyrics to the timeless hit “The Greatest Love of All,” or that Randy Watson was the genius behind the words when he led the wildly-famous soul band “Sexual Chocolate.” Actually, the song was originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the [...]

K’Naan: Straight Outta Mogadishu

Straight Outta Mogadishu Somali-born rapper K’naan on African pirates and the world’s hardest ghetto. —By Eamon Kircher-Allen for Mother Jones K’naan’s music sounds a little like Eminem’s, if Slim Shady had spent his childhood dodging bullets in Somalia’s civil war. The 30-year-old hip-hop artist (born Kaynaan Warsame) grew up on the mean streets of Mogadishu and escaped in [...]

“I Want Michelle Obama Arms!”

She’s Pumped. Your Turn. By LIZ ROBBINS THE arms have taken on a life of their own. They have provoked controversy, envy, a bit of backlash, even bad puns about the right to bare them. But enough debate and deconstruction. Now women are talking about construction. “I want Michelle Obama arms,” Julie Eich told her trainer on the [...]

Why Biofuels Are the Rainforest’s Worst Enemy

Why Biofuels Are the Rainforest’s Worst Enemy. By Heather Rogers Nestled deep in the tropical rainforest on the island of Borneo, Pareh is a collection of about 60 weathered wooden houses perched on stilts and enfolded by coconut palms, banana trees, and the dappled green overhang of the towering forest. Pareh’s inhabitants belong to the indigenous tribes [...]
