About Me:
Ni sa bula vinaka - Kia ora koutou katoa!
Grin at the ready on the smiling side;
Hugs prevail within the family ride;
Gentle, armed, ready on the outside;
Urgent, peace filled, ready on the tip with the sincerest of pride.
Tag causes (the causes or issues you are most passionate about):
Addressing Poverty, Cultural Preservation, HIV/AIDS Education, Music as an Agent for Social Change, Prison Reform
Project or initiative you have started or would love to start:
We - Maori and Pacific people - are Ocean People. Our arrival here was by riding and knowing the waves.So many of our kids have not and maybe will not - experience the sea of our ancestors.
So to start an 'Adopt a Grommet' programme with seasoned sun wizened old dog (and dogess) surfers supporting skyscraper kids - introducing - then oh yes - then - UNLEASHING them, onto the waves.
To learn the length of their reach is to learn the strength of their selves. To stand and ride, when all around them is chaos, is to see that even when their environments crash beside them, they will stand and ride.
Then they will learn which seas to choose, and they will take the steps they need to, to exercise that right. To choose. To choose who they are, where they stand, and where they ride.
What skills and resources do you currently have for your initiative? What are the current needs for your initiative?
I have the space to find what I need because someone gave me the gift of a floating board, a wide open sky and QUIET.
Finding people who would take the time - to pick up a kid, lend them a board, and teach them how to surf.
We have just voted in a government that will send all of us to the hills for solace, so now is the time to begin. Just gotta get them in the cars!
What kind of change do you hope to create in your community or in the world? Why are you passionate about this? How has your personal story led you to this passion?
That Children are Equal and that hard times don't hurt Mums and Grandma's first, hardest and longest.
Women speaking on Marae (all marae) in my lifetime.
Can someone please make another Gargoyles series?
I wish that families didn't frown at the kid who bought up that uncomfortable thing that NOONE talks about. Or kicked them under the table.
I would like someone clever to make carob taste nicer ... and ...
I do wish The Roots would come back to Aotearoa for another concert.
Additional Comments/Favorite Quote/Favorite Album/Other:
Don't complain about the soldiers if you're not gonna do anything about the war - Don't mistake my tolerance for solace - When the music finishes, turn off the lights (Jim Morrison)

Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Anyone who’s been through a serious loss knows about the baffling part: After it’s over, you are still you. You are you, plus the loss, plus the pain and confusion the loss causes. The process of healing isn’t really a matter of “getting over it” — taking it in is what’s necessary, incorporating what’s been [...]

Maxwell: BLACKsummers’ Night

The best way to listen to Maxwell’s new “BLACKsummers’ Night” is with the volume turned all the way up. The R&B artist didn’t take a turn toward heavy metal during the eight years he’s spent between releasing albums; this one, like his previous three, is full of meditative jams written on the continuum between ardor [...]

Laura Izibor: Let The Truth Be Told

The Irish diva is soon to go global via her debut album on Atlantic. This album from the young Dubliner was set to be released on Jive Records three years ago, but got shelved. Then, another label, Atlantic, took their time in deciding just when it should see be released. “Let The Truth Be Told” [...]

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

I believe that children our our future. Most people think Whitney Houston penned the lyrics to the timeless hit “The Greatest Love of All,” or that Randy Watson was the genius behind the words when he led the wildly-famous soul band “Sexual Chocolate.” Actually, the song was originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the [...]

K’Naan: Straight Outta Mogadishu

Straight Outta Mogadishu Somali-born rapper K’naan on African pirates and the world’s hardest ghetto. —By Eamon Kircher-Allen for Mother Jones K’naan’s music sounds a little like Eminem’s, if Slim Shady had spent his childhood dodging bullets in Somalia’s civil war. The 30-year-old hip-hop artist (born Kaynaan Warsame) grew up on the mean streets of Mogadishu and escaped in [...]

“I Want Michelle Obama Arms!”

She’s Pumped. Your Turn. By LIZ ROBBINS THE arms have taken on a life of their own. They have provoked controversy, envy, a bit of backlash, even bad puns about the right to bare them. But enough debate and deconstruction. Now women are talking about construction. “I want Michelle Obama arms,” Julie Eich told her trainer on the [...]

Why Biofuels Are the Rainforest’s Worst Enemy

Why Biofuels Are the Rainforest’s Worst Enemy. By Heather Rogers Nestled deep in the tropical rainforest on the island of Borneo, Pareh is a collection of about 60 weathered wooden houses perched on stilts and enfolded by coconut palms, banana trees, and the dappled green overhang of the towering forest.
