Pin@y Educational Partnerships:
Among the first experiences to set me on my path towards becoming a teacher was my introduction to and involvement in Pin@y Educational Partnerships. The PEP program is a service-learning project that began in 2001 to attend to the vastly underserved Filipina/o American student population at Balboa High School. Similar to the experiences of those who pioneered Ethnic and Asian American Studies at SF State, the number of these urban youth greatly outnumbered that of their Filipina/o American teachers. Consequently, students have lacked educators and role models who are fully representative, culturally sensitive, and openly receptive of their history and background. Thus, I became 1 of 11 SF State Students chosen by Professor Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales to build and foster partnerships with these youth so that they may have positive mentors at school. As the mentoring continued, we became aware that these students longed for not only role models who they could deeply relate to, but also for an actual course to delve into the content of Filipino/Filipino American history and experiences. Students also expressed that although their current World and U.S. history courses made some mention of Filipinos, ultimately they felt this material fell short of providing a full understanding of their place in this larger historical context. Hearing the youth voice their opinions in this manner became a major turning point for both the program and me as it drove us to shift from our roles as mentors into teachers now responsible for an actual course.

Praxis Roks Collective:
Coupled with my love for teaching is my passion for creative writing and performance. As a founding member of the Hip Hop collective Praxis Roks, I have worked to fuse education and Hip Hop to engage communities in dialogue about various personal, local and global issues. From this, I have helped provide workshops on the "power of voice" and the various ways of using that power to communicate.

Peep the "Courageous Conversations" that my friend Michelle is getting jumping off in the Education Group on here. And I'm feeling that playlist you've got up for sure. Peace.

Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Anyone who’s been through a serious loss knows about the baffling part: After it’s over, you are still you. You are you, plus the loss, plus the pain and confusion the loss causes. The process of healing isn’t really a matter of “getting over it” — taking it in is what’s necessary, incorporating what’s been [...]

Maxwell: BLACKsummers’ Night

The best way to listen to Maxwell’s new “BLACKsummers’ Night” is with the volume turned all the way up. The R&B artist didn’t take a turn toward heavy metal during the eight years he’s spent between releasing albums; this one, like his previous three, is full of meditative jams written on the continuum between ardor [...]

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

I believe that children our our future. Most people think Whitney Houston penned the lyrics to the timeless hit “The Greatest Love of All,” or that Randy Watson was the genius behind the words when he led the wildly-famous soul band “Sexual Chocolate.” Actually, the song was originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the [...]

K’Naan: Straight Outta Mogadishu

Straight Outta Mogadishu Somali-born rapper K’naan on African pirates and the world’s hardest ghetto. —By Eamon Kircher-Allen for Mother Jones K’naan’s music sounds a little like Eminem’s, if Slim Shady had spent his childhood dodging bullets in Somalia’s civil war. The 30-year-old hip-hop artist (born Kaynaan Warsame) grew up on the mean streets of Mogadishu and escaped in [...]

“I Want Michelle Obama Arms!”

She’s Pumped. Your Turn. By LIZ ROBBINS THE arms have taken on a life of their own. They have provoked controversy, envy, a bit of backlash, even bad puns about the right to bare them. But enough debate and deconstruction. Now women are talking about construction. “I want Michelle Obama arms,” Julie Eich told her trainer on the [...]
